I've had the pleasure of working for the Navire Avenire organization which organizes help for refugees who seek rescue on a ship that transports them through the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.
Together with a group of other students, we have created cards that aim to be helpful for the refugees who speak various languages and therefore often face issues with communication. Pictograms are a universal language, hence we have decided to use them as a key visual in our cards. We have made deep research in order to make them representative of all cultures, by not only showing people of different races and clothing but also by researching how things look across the world. For example, bread can be a pita, a kaiser roll, a pumpernickel bread, a croissant, and so on. You can see the research mindmap below.
